Another year gone and another round of awards. The 19th D.I.C.E. annual Video Game Awards is a ceremony where members of the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences and the International Game Developers Association vote on their favourite games in a number of categories.

The winner of this year’s prestigious game of the year award went to Fallout 4. The game also managed to walk away with awards for outstanding achievement in game direction and also, RPG of the year. The awards didn’t stop there, Fallout Shelter walked away with mobile game of the year.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, a popular favourite for game of the year, bagged awards for outstanding achievement in story, technical achievement and game design. We do feel that Witcher 3 was more of game of the year and if nothing else, RPG of the year. The judges have spoken however, and we have to live with it.

Ori and the Blind Forest, one of the most beautiful and surreal games to be released last year, deservedly walked away with awards for outstanding achievement in animation, art direction and original music composition.

The sports game of the year was a no-brainer. Rocket League comfortable walked away with the award, also managing to grab awards for outstanding achievement in online gameplay and the Sprite award. The Sprite awards is awarded to a game crafted with limited resources and Rocket League definitely falls into that category.

The winner for action game of the year was, surprisingly, Star Wars: Battlefront. Surprising because the game doesn’t have real value. It did, however, deserve the award it received for outstanding achievement in sound design.

Among other awards, Super Mario Maker won family game of the year and Rise of the Tomb Raider won the award for outstanding achievement in character creation. Mortal Kombat X took fighting game of the year and Forza Motorsport 6 took racing game of the year.

The late Satoru Iwata, Nintendo’s former president, was awarded a lifetime achievement award for his outstanding work and contribution to the gaming world.
